Retained Earnings
Definition
Cumulative profits a company keeps rather than pays out.
Retained earnings are the portion of net income a company reinvests in the business instead of distributing as dividends, accumulating over time on the balance sheet. They fund growth, debt repayment, or buybacks and reflect a firm history of profitability.
In a sentence
Rather than pay dividends, the firm plowed its retained earnings back into new factories.
