Finance glossary
Principal
Definition
The original sum of money borrowed or invested.
Principal is the initial amount of a loan or investment, separate from any interest. In a loan, payments reduce the principal over time; in an investment, returns are earned on it. Distinguishing principal from interest is key to understanding amortization and growth.
In a sentence
Each mortgage payment chipped away at the principal while the rest covered interest.
