Lagging Indicator
Definition
An economic metric that changes after the broader economy has shifted.
Lagging indicators, like the unemployment rate and corporate profits, confirm trends after they are underway rather than predicting them. They are useful for verifying the direction and strength of a cycle once leading indicators have already signaled a change.
In a sentence
Unemployment is a lagging indicator, often still rising months after a recovery has begun.
