Supply and Demand

Economics · beginner
Definition

The relationship between availability and desire that sets prices.

Supply and demand is the core model of markets: as price rises, supply tends to increase and demand to fall, settling at an equilibrium price where the two meet. Shifts in either curve move prices and quantities, explaining most everyday market behavior.

In a sentence

When a frost wiped out the harvest, supply and demand sent coffee prices soaring.
