Soft Landing
Definition
Slowing an economy enough to curb inflation without causing a recession.
A soft landing is the ideal outcome of tightening monetary policy: inflation cools while growth slows modestly and unemployment stays low, avoiding recession. It is difficult to achieve because rate hikes work with a lag and can easily tip an economy into contraction.
In a sentence
The Fed hoped for a soft landing, taming inflation without tipping the economy into recession.
