Overdraft

Withdrawing more money than an account holds.

An overdraft occurs when a transaction exceeds the available balance, and the bank covers the shortfall as a short-term loan, usually charging a fee. Overdraft protection can prevent declined payments but often comes with high costs, drawing regulatory scrutiny.
