The value of the next best alternative given up by a choice.

Opportunity cost is what you sacrifice when choosing one option over another. Money invested in stocks has the opportunity cost of bond interest forgone. It underlies rational decision-making, reminding us that every choice has a hidden cost beyond its price tag.
