Operational Risk

Risk · intermediate
Definition

Risk of loss from failed processes, people, or systems.

Operational risk stems from internal failures such as fraud, human error, system outages, or legal breaches, rather than market or credit movements. Banks set aside capital against it, and strong controls, audits, and redundancy are the main defenses.

In a sentence

A rogue trader's hidden losses were a costly reminder of operational risk.
