Herd Mentality

Behavioral Finance · beginner
Definition

Following the crowd instead of independent analysis.

Herd mentality is the tendency to mimic the actions of a larger group, buying because others buy and selling in panics. It inflates bubbles and deepens crashes as investors abandon their own judgment. Resisting the herd is central to contrarian and value investing.

In a sentence

Driven by herd mentality, buyers piled into the bubble simply because everyone else was.
