Efficient Market Hypothesis
Definition
The theory that prices already reflect all available information.
The efficient market hypothesis argues that asset prices incorporate all known information, so consistently beating the market is nearly impossible without luck or inside information. It supports passive index investing, though behavioral finance and market anomalies challenge it.
In a sentence
Believing the efficient market hypothesis, she gave up stock-picking and bought an index fund.
