Economies of Scale

Economics · beginner
Definition

Falling cost per unit as output grows.

Economies of scale arise when fixed costs spread across more units, when bulk purchasing lowers input prices, or when larger operations specialise. They are a central reason industries consolidate and a common justification for mergers. They do not continue indefinitely: beyond some size, coordination costs rise and the advantage reverses.

In a sentence

Economies of scale let the larger factory produce each unit for noticeably less.
