Disinflation

Macro · intermediate
Definition

A slowdown in the rate of inflation, not a fall in prices.

Disinflation means prices are still rising but at a slower pace, for example inflation cooling from 6 percent to 3 percent. It differs from deflation, where prices actually fall. Central banks often aim for disinflation to bring an overheating economy back toward their target.

In a sentence

Inflation cooling from 6% to 3% was disinflation; prices were still rising, just more slowly.
