Definition

The risk a borrower fails to make required debt payments.

Default risk is the chance that a bond issuer cannot pay interest or repay principal. Credit ratings estimate it, and higher perceived risk means higher yields demanded by investors. Government bonds in a nation own currency are usually treated as nearly default-free.
