Cost of Capital

Corporate Finance · advanced
Definition

The required return needed to justify an investment or project.

The cost of capital is the minimum return a company must earn to satisfy its investors, blending the cost of debt and the cost of equity. It serves as the hurdle rate for projects and the discount rate in valuation. Earning above it creates value; below it destroys value.

In a sentence

A project only made sense if its return cleared the company's 9% cost of capital.
