Correspondent Banking

Banking · beginner
Definition

An arrangement where one bank provides services on behalf of another, often across borders.

Correspondent banking lets a bank without a direct presence in a foreign country still offer services there by partnering with a local bank that holds accounts and processes payments on its behalf. It's the plumbing behind much of international trade finance and cross-border money transfers.

In a sentence

The small regional bank relied on a correspondent banking relationship in Europe to process its clients' overseas wire transfers.
