Options & Derivatives · advanced
Definition

When longer-dated futures trade above the current spot price.

Contango describes a market where longer-dated futures trade above near-term prices, often reflecting storage and carrying costs. Investors rolling futures contracts in contango lose value over time, a drag that hurts some commodity ETFs. It is the opposite of backwardation.

In a sentence

Because the oil futures were in contango, the ETF lost value each time it rolled its contracts.
